Openjamm: A one stop destination for live music performances

Music is life. Well, for some people this may not be as true but for Marcel Hoover, this is certainly the case. It was this love for music and the desire to contribute to the music community that made Marcel quite his job and start Openjamm, a Bangalore based startup focused on the music industry.

Growing up as a musician in Bangalore, I found it difficult to validate my music and find bands I could collaborate with. Openjamm helps eliminate these obstacles and helps them build a career with a schedule of regular live gigs, says Marcel.

We at Bangalore Insider had the opportunity to talk to Marcel about his latest startup. The sheer excitement with which he explains his startup is evidence enough to gauge the amount of passion this man has for music and musicians. Here are the excerpts:

Give a brief info about your startup?

Openjamm, the one stop for a musician and anyone looking to collaborate/host live music performances. While our day to day business entails curation of live performances at venues and events, we also host one feature presentation and workshop every month. Tickets for the features and workshop are on insider.

What made you start your startup and what problem does it solve?

Growing up as a musician in Bangalore, I found it difficult to validate my music and find bands I could collaborate with. Openjamm helps eliminate these obstacles and helps them build a career with a schedule of regular live gigs. Openjamm is also a portal to find quirky and fun places musicians can jamm at. Openjamm’s partnerships are opening a whole new scene for live artists.

Tell us about yourself, your previous jobs/ventures? What were you doing before this startup?

A corporate lawyer who moved into something more dynamic was everything events and co-working in Bangalore. The shift helped me get involved with startups and host some amazing events with great brands like Techhub and WeWork.

Where is your startup based out of? Why do you think that is the best place for you?

Openjamm is currently based out of WeWork Galaxy on Residency road. The culture and vibe at WeWork adds just the right flavour to our brand.

As a startup founder, what are you paranoid about? What keeps you awake at night?

Constantly worrying about the worst, Operationally or financially and problem solving every possible situation even before the storm.

Who are your competitions and how are you better than them?

Bangalore, like other cities have small clusters of musicians and inspired entrepreneurs hosting live acts in small spaces but ends with that. With the rise in upcoming artists, It’s always been difficult to find one platform with everything local music. One platform to hire and collaborate with talent around you.

How hard is it to have a work life balance as a startup founder and how do you manage it?

It’s actually quite simple if you’re able to draw a line between work and personal life. I try my best to make time to stay fit while getting performances curated to the best of our ability. Since music is something we’re so passionate about, we’re constantly talking about new acts, music and how we can always stay fresh as a brand.

Have you raised funding? If yes, then we would like to know the details. If no then please tell us if you are looking to raise.

No, we’re actually looking to raise a small bit but hoping to find the right match. Hoping to meet someone as passionate as we are about everything music and business.

What gets you excited about this company?

Openjamm has always been something that needed the right dedication and attention. Super excited to be another brand that helps the local music ecosystem thrive.

Tell us how a day in your life looks like? Your schedule for a day right from the time you get up till you hit the bed at night.

Everyday, is unique and perfect in its own way. From finding time to workout to listening to the best music you’ve heard all day to meeting new musicians and learning about their influences and inspirations to partnering with the best brands around us, nothing else can be better than this.
