A crowdfunding initiative with Milaap.org to create a facility for Oxygen generation and to set up ICU Ward for critically ill covid patients at Grand Port Hospital, Mumbai

Mumbai, 12th May 2021 – India is struggling to cope with the second wave of Coronavirus sweeping across the country. Hospitals are buckling under the pressure and running short of medical equipment and facilities to treat our vast population. In Mumbai itself, there is a large-scale need of ICU Beds and oxygen supplies, and many who required intensive care in their treatment have lost lives due to the unavailability of Critical Care beds and oxygen. The central government has faced much criticism about the lack of measures and safety protocols that have contributed to the current state of affairs.

Taking matters into our own hands and being proactive is the need of the hour for healthcare institutions. Zodiac Foundation established to support the charitable purposes and activities of Grand Port Hospital therefore urgently appeals to help India breathe again and save lives by donating and raising funds to create a facility for Oxygen generation and to set up a 25 bed ICU ward for critically ill covid patients. The appeal has been listed on Milap (milaap.org), a crowdfunding platform for charities.

Former Director of Pfizer Global R&D, Dr Makarand Jawadekar said: “The entire globe is currently in dire straits of helping hands in healthcare. It’s a telling time for every responsible global citizen to come forward and help India to breathe again and enhance CoViD vaccines & patient care accessibility for people from vulnerable societies. Zodiac Foundation and Grand Port Hospital, Wadala in Mumbai are coming forward for human welfare cause with its Oxygen Generation Plant and ICU Bed facilities for CoViD patients. We urge you to support Zodiac with your contributions of any sort so that they can help the people who are in desperate need.”

Below are the two fundraising initiatives:

Setup of ICU Beds – https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-covid-affected-peoples-with-icu-beds?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=fundraisers-title&mlp_referrer_id=5043991

The proposal envisages developing a 25 ICU beds facility to treat patients with the contagious outbreak of COVID. We propose to establish a 25 Bed ICU facility in the shortest possible time of 30 to 45 days. The ICU facility will have the following ICU beds, Ventilators, Multi-channel monitors, High Flow Nasal Canula (HNFC), Infusion pumps, Defibrillator, Fiber optic bronchoscope, USG, and Oxygen supply unit. The infrastructure will consist of HVAC, Lighting, Furniture, Waste disposal, and Infection control. Zodiac Foundation is calling for help by seeking funding of 4 cr for the infrastructure of 25 ICU Beds. We have tied up with Grand Port hospital in this mission, which would provide 5000 sq. ft. space, required manpower, and supporting infrastructure.

Oxygen Plant – https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-covid-affected-peoples-7?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=fundraisers-title&mlp_referrer_id=5043991

Instead of relying on supply chain systems for the delivery of Oxygen, we want to establish an Oxygen generation plant with a capacity of 500 liters per minute, which can cater to 95 patients at a flow rate of 5 LPM and charge 195 cylinders per day. The plant will prove to be pragmatic in dealing with urgent oxygen needs at Grant Port Hospital by generating on-site medical oxygen and providing excess oxygen to other neighboring hospitals.

Find more information on Oxygen Generator below:

The Oxygen Generator will be Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology; it is based on the selective adsorption phenomena of gas molecules under pressure on the surface of the highly porous and efficient adsorbent.

All operations will be taken place automatically. Oxygen Purity will remain very consistent.

The generator will be capable of non‐stop 24 hours operation.

The generator is a fully automatic unit and has a continuous Purity Check.

We are looking to raise 1.25 cr for this Oxygen Generator. With an increasing number of affected cases every day, medical oxygen is in severe shortage and it is the need of the hour to generate more oxygen. Support us in this cause to raise funds and together we shall save lives.

COVID-19 is a clear and present danger and the biggest challenge of it is to arrest the spread of this infection in absence of a vaccine or a cure.

Chairman of Ajeenkya DY Patil Group, Dr Ajeenkya DY Patil said “We are currently in a state where we are living from one emergency to another. The population at the bottom of our social pyramid has suffered the most due to a lack of medical facilities and availability. Over the past few weeks, many have lost lives in ambulances and parking lots outside hospitals. Certainly, we are not in the same boat, but we are in the same ocean. And, many of us are drowning. As responsible citizens of the nation, it is our duty to come together and serve those who need us. This facility that we seek to create will continue to exist even after the present times and serve the people of the city of Mumbai those who cannot afford critical care. As hospitals are operating in a very critical situation today, many patients are left in need of oxygen. It is difficult to source oxygen for immediate situations in case of unavailability at the hospital. Zodiac Foundation aims at solving availability issues by an Oxygen Plant that directly supplies to the hospital with an advantage to treat who require urgent medical attention with extended ICU bed facility.”

The country is in chaos and people are beyond suffering in an unimaginable situation. Hospitals are overloaded, operating in very poor conditions, and running out of important provisions. The situation is serious and many are losing lives. Zodiac Foundation urges you to contribute towards saving our nation.
