Meet Deepa, she is a work from home professional, an inspiration to lot many Indian moms who want to make their career along with their kids. Read her full inspiring story.
It grew from “time-pass” to “passion” over time, and I really happy the way things have turned out, says Deepa.
Tell us about yourself, what do you like most about your field of work?
I am Deepa Govind,I am a work from home professional since 2007. I am a Zoho Product Consultant (Creator-Developer, Solution Architect, and Zoho Creator Trainer).
I am a Zoologist by education, Blogger by hobby, Freelance Virtual Assistant by chance, and Homepreneur® by transition. The best thing about work is, since the time I started, I have been working from home. During this period, we have moved across continents, and relocated our home as well. Yet none of these affected work.
Your previous jobs/ventures? What were you doing before choosing this field?
I am am aquatic biologist from MSUniversity, Vadodara. Before setting foot on Zoho Product Consultation, I was and avid blogger and nature photography enthusiast. Writing and photography kept me busy for most part of the day before venturing out as a Homepreneur®. It grew from “time-pass” to “passion” over time, and I really happy the way things have turned out.
How did you land up doing what you do now?
Blogging is hard work. Writing the content is the easiest part of it.
It is the research that goes in before we pen the first draft, the most difficult part of being a blogger. We come across new topic ideas while we are researching on something. Unless we have a system to track our title ideas, the writer’s block can paralyze us for days end.
During my research on “using blogs to find a freelance gig”, I came across Zoho Creator. I wanted a HTML form to go on my blog to collect enquirers from potential clients. But was afraid to share my contact details directly. With Zoho Creator, I was able to build my form – Set up basic automation – and track my prospects within a couple of hours. This was my EURKA moment with Zoho Creator.
Over time, I taught myself how to build apps on Zoho Creator, with their proprietary scripting language (Deluge scripting), and 6 months later, I am building custom apps for businesses. Since then, I am building custom apps on Zoho Creator for small and medium businesses
If not the current profession, what would you have been?
I am an aquatic biologist , and had reached out NIO (National Institute of Oceanography) during my academic years.
Life happened, and I did not pursue it further.
What motivates you to keep going?
I dont have to dread the traffic to go to work, and the flexibility of shifting my schedule is what I love about my work.
Isnt that motivation enough??
Tell us how a day in your life looks like? Your schedule for a day right from the time you get up till you hit the bed at night.
My day starts around 4:30 am, coz the kids have to leave for school at 7:30. So within the next two and half hour, I need to get the meals done, boxes packed and shake up 8 year old twins in the dead of the winter to have a bath for school. So work happens around chores for the rest of the day. My maid helps with tidying up the house. As the morning settles down by 11:00am, its time for me to take client calls and take important work decisions.
Soon, its time for lunch, and pick up from school at 3.00pm. Evening is filled with Homework, Snacks, and Playtime. Soon its time for dinner at 8 for the kids. A couple of hours more at work to finish day end tasks, its light out for me at 10:00 pm max
Any regrets till now? If yes, will you like to share it with our readers?
No, Destiny has been kind that way. My immediate and extended family has been supportive of my work from home (erratic) schedule.
I very rarely step out for work ( There is a virtual counterpart for everything). When it is extremely necessary, the family has pitched in to manage my home and kids
If you were given a choice of meeting any person you want, who will be that person?
Nikola Tesla
“Thank you for all the technology you have bestowed up us (me) to make my work from home a living reality.”
Need I say more !!
What is the biggest misconception that you think people have about you?
That I am just another mom who sulks at home all day
..you see.. work keeps me so busy between the chores, I barely get to go out for kitty parties.
Any message that you want to send to your readers?
Working from home and making a decent living out of it is not a myth. It is very much a reality. This is not an overnight success, but years of painstaking effort and learning that all started with ONE ACTION A DAY, and repeat the same over and over again for all the days to come.
Ideas are never silly. It is the ideas that never get pursued die a silent death.
Silly idea is better than no-idea at all. Pursue every silly idea that hits your head. See it to completion
Pick the next silly idea and move on.
Trust me, If you have pursued your silly-idea in all honesty, your will never have to look past your 3rd silly idea.
