Modo Caldo is a Delhi based startup founded by Jigyasa Jolly. They provide universally appealing designs rich with exquisite references from all over the world.
I launched the brand as a high end luxury solution for Indian woman who is immersed in a global aesthetic. Every design is a creative tribute to an artist that has touched and inspired the designers, and the brand has managed to create unique and tastefully familiar fashion all at once, says Jigyasa.
We got an opportunity to talk with Jigyasaj, the founder of Modo Caldo. Read her story to know more about her journey as an entrepreneur.
Give a brief info about your startup?
Art meets fashion in Modo Caldo’s distinctive pieces. I launched the brand as a high end luxury solution for Indian woman who is immersed in a global aesthetic. Every design is a creative tribute to an artist that has touched and inspired the designers, and the brand has managed to create unique and tastefully familiar fashion all at once.
What made you start your startup and what problem does it solve?
It was while working with other designers that I felt like I was losing my identity and individuality as a designer. I wanted to bring my own aesthetic vision into design. That is when I decided to drop everything and work to bring my version of high fashion into the Indian market. I realized that there is a very thin line between Indo-Western and Western clothing, and that there isn’t much in the way of high fashion that is able to seamlessly fuse the two worlds. Modo Caldo was launched to do exactly this. Offering semi-conventional and artistic designer wear that is commercial at the same time, our products can be described as an amalgamation of western silhouettes with Indian aesthetics.
Tell us about yourself, your previous jobs/ventures? What were you doing before this startup?
I come from a slightly diverse background. I graduated in 2014 from Pearl Academy in New Delhi. After that, I worked with Vintage Shades, South Ex and Kukoon Designs Pvt Ltd, in Noida. I also did a short course in graphics, all before I launched Modo Caldo in 2016.
Where is your startup based out of? Why do you think that is the best place for you?
We are currently operating out of the capital city, Delhi. And what can be better than this? Delhi has always been a progressive and inspiring fashion hub. We love styling our clients here and across the country.
As a startup founder, what are you paranoid about? What keeps you awake at night?
Only my designs can keep me awake at night. This is because I’m running this label out of my passion for art, and am fully committed to it. Apart from that, it is obviously the numbers and revenues that give most entrepreneurs sleepless nights.
Who is your competition and how are you better than them?
In the creative fields, I believe the problem is that every designer is targeting similar clients. This is the biggest competition. Ultimately, it depends on the customer, what they choose to look at or buy. In this competitive field, what makes me stand out is my honesty, and uncompromising quality, and my designs themselves, which have managed to impress our clientele.
How hard is it to have a work-life balance as a startup founder and how do you manage it?
Well, my personal clock is all confused ever since I started this brand. There are no days and no nights. Luckily, I stay with my family and have no family of mine to look after. This allows me to be completely immersed in my work with no pressures on the side.
Have you raised funding? If yes, then we would like to know the details. If no then please tell us if you are looking to raise.
No, this is not something I’m looking at right now.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about you? Why do they have that? What’s the reality?
I suppose the one thing we have to repeatedly clear up is that we are not a boutique. We provide customization and personalization, but, then, we do not copy or imitate other’s work. Trust our design skills; we are not bad at all!
What gets you excited about this company?
I’m a creative person, so it is designing what keeps me going. It is an amazing feeling when someone appreciates your work.
Tell us how a day in your life looks like? Your schedule for a day right from the time you get up till you hit the bed at night.
I dedicate all my time to my business, so my day starts off with responding to messages and emails. Then I leave for the studio or to attend meetings, depending on my plan. The rest of the day goes into managing different aspects of the business. And then, late in the evening, I spend some quality time designing and planning my collections or scheming about how to expand.
Tell us about your team and how did you meet each other?
I single-handedly run Modo Caldo with the support of a strong production team.
